Everton on course for new points deduction after ‘huge’ twist – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the club are unlikely to follow Man City’s lead and mount a huge legal challenge against their third Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) charge.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Merseysiders don’t have the resources to go “all guns blazing” like City.

Everton were deducted eight points for PSR breaches in the 2023-24 campaign but face a further hearing over £6.5million in interest payments which the Premier League claim should be counted as losses.

Wyness previously told Football Insider (12 April) that his old side could face another “two to three-point deduction” after a new hearing.

In a new top-flight twist, Man City have launched unprecedented legal action against the Premier League in an attempt to end Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules.

Everton won’t go ‘all guns blazing’ despite Man City twist, says Wyness

Wyness claimed Everton’s issue is one of “technical accountancy” and suggested a big challenge would not be worthwhile.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think Everton have got the resources to follow Man City’s lead and fight this.

“It’s a very big factor because they’d have to mount a huge challenge.

“The charge outstanding is a very technical one, and the club will have to defend their auditors.

“It will be a technical accountancy issue, as I understand it.

“So I don’t think going in all guns blazing like Man City will help.

“I’m afraid Everton have been the scapegoat, once again, in all this. The league are thinking twice about taking on Man City, but this is just today’s playing field.”
