Everton points deduction: All hope has ‘evaporated’ after £91m reveal – Kieran Maguire

There is no hope of Everton avoiding a points deduction in their second PSR breach after they announced £91million had been spent on player signings.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that all hope of Everton’s deduction being reduced to zero “evaporated” after their accounts were published.

A Premier League statement published on Tuesday (15 April) revealed that Everton have decided to appeal the two-point deduction they received for their second breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules.

The hearing has been fast-tracked so that a verdict is delivered before the end of the Premier League season on 19 May.

Everton previously reduced their first punishment from 10 points down to six after a successful appeal and will hope to do the same again after their latest deduction left the club on the verge of the relegation zone.

Everton appeal cast in doubt after £91m reveal

However, Maguire believes a two-point deduction was as good as the club could have hoped for after their 2022-23 accounts revealed that they made a loss of £89million and spent £91million on player signings.

My hopes for Everton to avoid a points deduction in their second breach evaporated after they announced their losses,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

When it was announced that they had doubled their losses from £45million to £89million in 2022-23 and spent £91million on players that season, it was clear that another deduction was coming.

I think the two-point deduction was probably about as good as the club could have expected in terms of an initial ruling.

However, I’m sure the club will be confident that they’ll be able to reduce that deduction upon appeal.
