Everton points deduction update: Kieran Maguire issues ‘petty’ reaction

Kieran Maguire has described the last remaining PSR charges against Everton as “petty” after the club and the Premier League both confirmed that they have now been resolved.

The Toffees were heavily punished over those breaches of financial regulations last season, when they were deducted a combined eight points.

There had still been financial charges lingering against the club by the league for financial year 2023 that could have led to further deductions for the Merseyside outfit.

Now, that is no longer the case. In a statement published on Friday (17 January), Everton confirmed those charges had been discontinued by the Premier League, while also deeming them PSR compliant for 2024.

As a result the club are no longer at risk of being deducted further points, although Maguire is unimpressed by the situation regardless, suggesting it may still cost all involved financially.

Reacting to that update on the charges brought against the Toffees, the football finance expert wrote on X:

“I wonder how much the legal fees were for both parties in what always seemed a petty set of charges. EFC cleared is the good news for Evertonians”

Everton overcome a big concern with points deduction update

Football Insider Verdict

No doubt the main reaction to this from those at Goodison Park will be one of relief that the threat of a points deduction is now gone.

A disappointing defeat to West Ham in David Moyes’ first game back as Everton manager on Wednesday (15 January) means they are still just one point clear of the relegation zone.

A points deduction would therefore have put them at a major risk of dropping into the Championship in what would obviously be a big blow for the club.

With this issue now resolved though the Toffees can fully focus on results on the pitch as they aim to stay in the Premier League.

Following the takeover of Everton by The Friedkin Group, it also appears as though the club are on track to move to a more stable fiancial footing.

They should therefore now be confident that threats of problems such as points deductions ought to be a thing of the past.

In other news, David Moyes has been told what his first task is after returning to Everton.
