Kieran Maguire issues verdict on Everton being hit with retrospective sanctions – ‘It looks bad’
The financial picture at Everton “looks bad” – but it is unlikely that they will be retrospectively sanctioned by the Premier League.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toffees’ £372million losses since 2018-19.
The Premier League’s financial controls limit clubs to losses of £105m over three seasons, meaning Everton on face value have gone almost four times over the threshold.

The club have attributed £170m of the deficit to Covid factors, which are deductible from financial fair play.
Frank Lampard’s side ultimately escaped relegation on the penultimate day of the season, with Burnley falling into the final spot in the bottom three.
The Athletic reported last Friday (20 May) that the Clarets and Leeds United, who narrowly avoided the drop, have written to the Premier League about Everton’s alleged FFP breaches.
But Maguire does not believe that the Merseysiders will face any punishment from the top flight.
“It looks bad, £372m in three years,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“But, if the Premier League was going to bring sanctions, you’d have thought they would have been more proactive.
“My gut reaction therefore is that they are probably okay with regards to sanctions.
“Also, their total squad cost is £451m. They also have talents like Anthony Gordon who came through the club at zero cost. So they have saleable assets too.”

Everton finished their season with a 5-1 defeat at Arsenal last Sunday (22 May).
They will return with a pre-season trip to the United States in July.
