Everton ‘standing on a cliff edge’ after ‘staggering’ £121m reveal – pundit

Everton are “standing on a cliff-edge” after publishing their most recent accounts, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he was blown away by the Toffees’ “awful” financial situation.

Everton published their accounts for the 2020/21 season on Tuesday (29 March), posting losses of £120.9million.

The Toffees claim £103million of their losses for last season can be attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic.

They did report a record turnover of £193.1million and insist the club are in secure financial position.

However, Whelan admitted the club’s precarious league position means it must be nervy times for the Toffees.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s staggering. It’s been an awful season financially and on the field, hasn’t it?

“It’s just going from bad to worse for Everton at the minute. There’s no good news at all, with their financials and their fragility in the Premier League right now.

“This is not what the fans want to hear about a club that was supposedly building, going to a new stadium and trying to get into European football again with a team they were trying to assemble.

“When you talk about standing on a cliff edge and an avalanche, Everton comes to mind.”

Everton currently sit 17th in the Premier League table, three points off 18th-placed Watford.

However, the Toffees do have two games in hands over the Hornets and three over Leeds and Brentford ahead of them.

Frank Lampard’s men face West Ham on Sunday before travelling to relegation rivals Burnley in midweek.
