Sources: Nottingham Forest make approach to sign Everton star Michael Keane

Nottingham Forest have made an approach to Everton to sign Michael Keane on loan, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League new boys want to make the 29-year-old centre-back their 17th signing of the summer.

Steve Cooper is keen to strengthen his defence and sees Keane as the right fit.

Forest signed centre-back Moussa Niakhate from Mainz for around £9m earlier this summer, but the 26-year-old is expected to be sidelined for several months with a thigh injury.

Keane meanwhile, who is under contract at Goodison Park until 2025, has been an unused substitute for each of the Toffees’ three opening Premier League games in 2022-23.

His only football of the campaign so far came when he played the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 League Cup win over Fleetwood Town on Tuesday (23 August).

Keane has turned out 12 times for England, with his last appearance coming in November 2020.

The Man United academy product featured 38 times in all competitions in 2021-22 as Everton narrowly dodged relegation.

Fellow centre-backs Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina are both expected to be out of action for the foreseeable future with fibula and ankle injuries respectively.

Keane could therefore feature for Frank Lampard’s side in their clash against Brentford on Saturday (27 August).

Football Insider revealed on Friday (26 August) that the Brighton striker Neal Maupay, 26, is currently undergoing a medical ahead of a move to Merseyside.
