Revealed: Thelwell tried to sign Everton target Jannik Vestergaard when he was at Wolves

Kevin Thelwell tried to sign Everton target Jannik Vestergaard when he was in charge of transfers at Wolves, Football Insider understands.

This site revealed last week (31 March) that the Goodison director of football is keen on luring the giant centre-back from Leicester City.

Intriguingly, a recruitment source has told Football Insider that Thelwell also wanted to sign Vestergaard, 29, when he had the same role at Wolves.

The transfer guru had pushed for the Denmark international when he was at Southampton.

But Vestergaard headed to east rather than west Midlands when he joined Leicester last summer for a fee of around £15million.

It is a move that has not worked out for giant Dane even though Brendan Rodgers’ side have been deprived of Wesley Fofana and Jonny Evans due to long-term injuries.

Vestergaard has made just six Premier League starts among 20 appearances in all competitions.

His only two Premier League starts since early October have coincided with a 6-3 thrashing by Man City and a 3-2 defeat to Tottenham.

Vestergaard failed to even make the Leicester squad for Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Man United.

Fofana and Evans were restored together at centre-back, with it being the first match of the season for the former.

An Everton scout did nonetheless watch Vestergaard in action for his country in their 3-0 win over Serbia on Tuesday night.

Thelwell and the Goodison recruitment team value the Dane’s aerial dominance – he is 6ft 6in – and Premier League experience.

Vestergaard spent three years at Southampton after signing from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2018.

He has made 82 Premier League appearances as well as played 33 times for Denmark.
