Kieran Maguire salutes ‘best deal in the world’ after £6bn Everton reveal

Everton have managed to survive the pandemic by virtue of the Premier League’s remarkable domestic and international TV deals.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about how the Toffees have fared during the economic turbulence brought on by Covid.

Everton have lost over £370million in the last three recorded financial years, but they have so far managed to avoid any Financial Fair Play sanctions.

As relayed by Sports Pro on 18 August, financial analytics firm Deloitte now expect total Premier League revenue to top £5.5billion for 2021-22 and £6bn the following season.

That will mean that turnover has exceeded pre-Covid levels.

Maguire explains that the likes of Everton have the media deals to thank for the resurgence.

The Deloitte projections indicate that the Premier League was probably the best insulated of the European leagues,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

The reason for that is that the league has the world’s biggest domestic TV deal and by far the best international TV deals. They were therefore able to generate nearly all of that money during Covid, although there were some small rebates.

One or two deals were cancelled, most notably the one in China, but they still got a substantial windfall compared to other leagues.

“Part of the reason is that on average, the Premier League generates 14 per cent of income from ticket saeles. It is much higher than that everywhere else. It was a much smaller shortfall they had to deal with, therefore.

There was also the benefit of havinh many owners who are independently wealthy and some who did very well over Covid. It allowed them to underwrite the losses that were being incurred as a result of the pandemic.
