Everton told to complete ‘exciting’ Steven Bergwijn deal after revelation – pundit

Noel Whelan has backed Everton to launch an “exciting” move for Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old would be a “step above” the options Frank Lampard currently has at his disposal.

According to the Daily Mail (5 June), Everton are racing Ajax for Bergwijn’s signature – with the Dutch club already seeing a £17million offer rebuffed by Spurs.

Speaking to Dutch outlet AD (5 June), the former PSV winger insisted Champions League “isn’t even a top priority” for him in the future.

He claimed his main priority is to play regular football.

Bergwijn, who is under contract until June 2025, scored three Premier League goals in the 2021-22 campaign despite making just four top-flight starts.

Whelan suggested the Toffees must now open the chequebook to pull clear of relegation danger.

“I think Frank Lampard and Everton realise they’ll have to spend some money,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“They want to make sure they’re never in that position again.

“Bergwijn is a good age, he’s exciting, a full international. When he’s come on for Tottenham he has looked a really good player.

“I just don’t think he’s someone Conte wants to keep around, they’re not suited.

“But for a club like Everton – he’s a step above what they have.

“He could give them a good four years, or more, of service.

“He’d be a really good signing for them.”
