Everton told to complete striker signing as Michail Antonio plan emerges – Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Everton should steer clear of a deal for West Ham’s Michail Antonio and sign a “young and hungry” striker.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 33-year-old’s “best days are behind him” after his role with the Irons was reduced in the 2022-23 campaign.

According to The Sun (19 March), Everton will move for West Ham striker Antonio in the summer window if they survive relegation to the Championship.

The report claims the Jamaica international is at the top of the Toffees’ striker shortlist – and Farhad Moshiri is said to be ready to fund the move if relegation is averted.

Antonio has netted nine goals in 33 appearances across all competitions this season – but just three strikes have come in the Premier League.

He is under contract at the London Stadium until June 2024 – and earns a reported £85,000-a-week at the London club.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “This deal only gets done with Everton in the Premier League.

“Even with that, is Antonio the same player he was two years ago? I don’t think he is.

“I don’t think Everton should be looking at him if they stay up. They’ve got the chance to build something if they can do that.

“They should be looking at a nice, young striker who is hungry to improve and improve Everton.

“I think Antonio’s best days are behind him, unfortunately. He’s in and out of the team at West Ham.”
