Everton told to exploit Dele Alli ‘get-out’ clause and bin ‘problem’ player for ‘nothing’ – pundit

Everton should release Dele Alli at the end of the season before they have to pay a transfer fee.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Alli’s long-term future.

The 25-year-old joined the Toffees on 31 January on a two-and-a-half-year deal, initially for nothing, with a final transfer fee to be paid based on appearances and other factors.

As reported by The Daily Mail (31 January) Everton will have to pay Spurs a £10million fee once Alli has made 20 appearances for the club.

After making six appearances so far, the midfielder cannot reach that 20-game threshold this season, giving Everton a chance to cut ties with the player for nothing this summer.

Kenny insists this is an option the Toffees should consider.

“We all said he needed a change of scenery,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“But he’s gone there and he can’t get a game. This is four or five managers in a row who are not playing him.

“I don’t know if he looks like he’s in love with game. I think he’s lost that.

“If you don’t have that love, you shouldn’t be playing football.

“This isn’t just one club and two managers, it’s two clubs and four or five managers so he is the problem, clearly.

“At some point he needs to look in the mirror and take some pride in his performances.

“Will they let him go in the summer? Maybe. I don’t think he has a long-term future there so maybe it’s for the best.

“If Everton can get away with paying nothing, it’s essentially a get-out clause and I think that’s the right plan.”
