Everton told to seal Cody Gakpo deal in January after source reveals new twist – pundit
Noel Whelan has backed Everton to bolster their attack by sealing a January move for PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Toffees will be just one of many clubs “kicking themselves” after missing out on the 23-year-old in the summer.
Football Insider revealed on Monday (19 September) that PSV Eindhoven sensation Gakpo is set to change agents in a boost to Premier League clubs including Everton.
The Toffees, Man United, and Southampton are among the clubs pursuing the Netherlands international ahead of the January window.
PSV director Marcel Brands has been quoted as saying Gakpo can depart the club if he receives “certain offers” for the forward.
He has started the new season with 10 goals and nine assists in 13 games and scored for the Netherlands against Poland on Thursday (22 September).
Whelan suggested Everton may have to “pay that little bit more” to beat other clubs to his signature in January.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think they’ll be a lot of clubs wishing they went harder to get him in.
“Hindsight is a great thing, but clubs were working to a tight summer budget. There’s obviously a great player there.
“January is coming up, and there could be an opportunity for Everton to maybe pay that little bit more to get him in before any other club.

“That’s why the World Cup is so important. He could shine on the big stage, and there could be a bit of movement.
“He’s a quality player and Everton will be just one of the clubs kicking themselves that they didn’t get a deal done in the summer.”
