‘Everton withdraw Dominic Calvert-Lewin contract offer’

Everton have taken a contract offer they previously made to striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin off the table.

The England international sees his current deal with the Toffees expire at the end of this season, meaning he could soon leave the club on a free transfer.

That has led to speculation about a move elsewhere, although Football Insider was recently told a move for Calvert-Lewin by Newcastle has hit a stumbling block amid Eddie Howe’s doubts over fitness issues.

Meanwhile, a fresh twist has emerged over the stance Everton have taken around the 28-year-old’s situation.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin contract twist emerges

It was reported at the end of last season that the Merseyside club had held talks with Calvert-Lewin around a new contract [BBC Sport], which he had left unsigned throughout the current campaign.

However, a fresh update from The Liverpool Echo has now indicated that the offer Everton made to the striker at that point is no longer available.

As a result, it appears the striker has to earn a new offer from the club if he is to extend his stay beyond this season.

There may though still be a chance that could happen, with recent reports stating Calvert-Lewin’s agents have contacted Everton about his contract situation, looking to reopen talks.

The player himself also recently expressed an interest in extending his stay with the club into the 2025/26 campaign and beyond.

Moyes will therefore have to weigh up his options over the future of the striker, especially with Calvert-Lewin only recently returning to action for Everton after another long injury layoff.

Everton to a take a risk either way with contract decision

Football Insider Verdict

Whether or not they do make the offer of a new contract to the 28-year-old, the Toffees will be taking something of a gamble.

With Leeds interested in another Everton striker in Beto [Sky Sports], letting Calvert-Lewin go too could leave them short on attacking depth, with the injury prone Armando Broja only on loan from Chelsea.

But if they do choose to keep the England international, they are once again banking on his fitness holding up, and history shows there is no guarantee that will happen.

It is also interesting to note that Calvert-Lewin may seemingly be more open to a new contract with the club now after the Friedkin Group completed their takeover of the club from Farhad Moshiri in December.

That was of course also followed by Moyes replacing Sean Dyche as manager, so this could suggest the striker may prefer the environment at the club since those changes.

On the flip side, a lack of interest from elsewhere may also have had a say in that, all of which will give Everton plenty to think about as they consider offering Calvert-Lewin a new deal.
