David Moyes edges closer to Everton exit after new twist
David Moyes is edging towards leaving Everton upon the expiry of his contract next summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The boss is in the final year of his contract at Everton, and there has been little progress towards renewing his terms, opening the door for a potential exit in 2027.
While talks are believed to have taken place during the summer, he admitted ahead of the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea that those discussions have now hit "a bit of a lull".
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, The Friedkin Group's decision to put Everton on sale has delayed a decision over Moyes' future.
The former Man United boss has done an outstanding job since his return to Merseyside, with the Chelsea defeat their first of the season, and he has likely earned a new deal.
However, his frosty relationship with the current owners and uncertainty surrounding a potential takeover has called Moyes' future at the Hill Dickinson Stadium into doubt.
Could David Moyes be set to leave Everton?
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson warned Football Insider last month that a potential takeover at Everton would likely see Moyes lose his job.
Any incoming owners will likely want to have their own man in place at the helm, and Moyes' contract situation would be the ideal opportunity for all parties to move on.
While that is far from a certainty as things stand, TFG's decision to sell the club has raised questions about Moyes' future which cannot yet be answered by the boss or the club.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "There is uncertainty about Moyes' future because of the ownership situation at Everton, with the club being put up for sale by The Friedkin Group.
"Moyes' contract at Everton is up in the summer as well, so that will lead to speculation and uncertainty over his future and whether he will sign a new deal.
"It seems that any talks over his future will probably be delayed with the owners looking to sell, so we will wait and see what happens there.
"He's got an outstanding managerial CV, managed the likes of Manchester United, he did a very good job at West Ham and obviously he's doing a good job at Everton in his second spell there.
"So a number of clubs are going to be interested if Moyes becomes available and if he leaves Everton next summer."
Where could Moyes go after leaving Everton?
Should Moyes be allowed to leave Everton next summer, speculation will turn towards his next destination, amid questions about his long-term future in management.
Given his impressive CV, there is expected to be no shortage of suitors for the boss, with clubs in the Premier League and elsewhere in Europe likely to be keen.
Football Insider revealed on 16 October that Celtic are eyeing Moyes as a potential replacement for Martin O'Neill amid growing uncertainty over his future.
The 74-year-old is also out of contract at the end of the season, while there have been questions asked of his immediate position after a difficult run of form at Parkhead.
Moyes' knowledge of Celtic, having represented the club during his playing career, has placed him high on their list of targets and a deal could be explored if he is available.
