Everton will 'follow West Ham to the Championship' if David Moyes leaves - 'they'll be in huge trouble'

Everton have been warned they will put themselves at risk of following West Ham's trajectory into the Championship if David Moyes leaves next summer.

The 63-year-old has done an outstanding job since his return to Merseyside in 2025, but is out of contract at the end of the season with no new deal on the table as things stand.

The Toffees' strong start to the season has largely been chalked up to the manager getting the best out of his players, and there are concerns they could drop off without him.

Former West Ham scout Mick Brown, who worked closely alongside Moyes at the London Stadium, told Football Insider that it would be a "huge error" for Everton to let him go.

After seven Premier League games this season, the Toffees have suffered just one defeat, which came in their last outing as Chelsea won 2-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Moyes is due plenty of praise for Everton's displays, but alongside a fractured relationship with the board and the club being put up for sale, doubts have grown about his future.

Will David Moyes leave Everton next summer?

Football Insider revealed on 18 October that Moyes is edging towards leaving Everton as talks over a potential contract extension have been delayed by the ownership.

The Friedkin Group's decision to put Everton on sale has delayed a decision over the manager's future, and as things stand, he is due to move on at the end of the season.

However, given his importance to their recent success, Everton have been urged to make every effort to keep Moyes at the club, or they will risk a major drop off.

"Everton are very much in danger of becoming another West Ham," Brown told Football Insider.

"I'm led to believe he would be more than happy to stay at Everton if he was offered a new contract, but the question is about whether that new deal would be forthcoming.

"The fact he hasn't had a converstaion with the chairman in 18 months is a serious concern, and with the club now up for sale, I'm not convinced that will change any time soon.

"But Everton will be in huge trouble if Moyes is allowed to move on, because he is a big part of the reason whey they're in the position they're in at the moment.

"They've got a tiny squad, and they've got a few top players, but Moyes is getting the best out of every single one of them, and that won't be the same under somebody else.

"For example, James Garner has been excellent and got into the England team, and James Tarkowski is brilliant every week at the back. Would that be the same under another coach?

"I think Moyes is doing an excellent job there and they would be stupid to lose him, because we saw what happened at West Ham, and it feels very similar at Everton."

What would new ownership mean for Moyes' future?

Uncertainty surrounding Moyes' future at Everton has come as a result of the club being put up for sale, casting doubt over the manager's position and contract talks.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson warned Football Insider last month that a potential takeover at Everton would likely see the manager lose his job.

Any incoming owners will likely want to have their own man in place at the helm, and Moyes' contract situation would be the ideal opportunity for all parties to move on.

While there is still a long way to go before any sale is agreed at Everton, and TFG remain focused on running the club in the meantime, speculation is refusing to die down.
