Why Teun Koopmeiners could push for Everton move after source's reveal
Everton have held a long-standing interest in Juventus star Teun Koopmeiners, even dating back to his Atalanta days.
The midfielder-turned-defender joined the Old Lady in a £46million deal back in the summer of 2024, but his stay has been far from ideal.
During his final season at Atalanta, he was one of the best players in Serie A, notching 15 goals and seven assists in 51 games. That player has disappeared.
He continues to drift further and further down the pitch, and even when called up to the Netherlands team, he deputises at full-back on the international stage.
Despite all of this, Football Insider understands that the Toffees are still very much interested in acquiring his signature in the January window.
While he is not a "big priority," those at the Hill Dickinson Stadium are keen to bolster the squad with high-quality reinforcements in the winter.
Everton move could unlock Teun Koopmeiners
But why would he choose Merseyside of all places to land in the Premier League? After all, David Moyes does have plenty of choices in midfield.
Well, he is extremely unlikely to be signed as a centre-back, especially given that the Toffees don't play with a back-three formation.
James Tarkowski, Michael Keane and Jarrad Branthwaite have all formed bonds, meaning that a spot in midfield is far more likely for Koopmeiners.
The 28-year-old has previously admitted that his best position is in the middle of the park, and at the moment, that would be up for grabs.
Undoubtedly, James Garner is one of Moyes' best players, but next to him, Everton seem to be missing some firepower. Koopmeiners' creativity is a no-brainer.
What would this mean for Harrison Armstrong?
Harrison Armstrong has started all five of the Toffees' Premier League matches in 2026-27, partnering Garner perfectly in midfield.
However, at just 19 years of age, he still has a lot to learn, and he would have that opportunity under Koopmeiners, who has a wealth of knowledge.
The Toffees nearly sold the academy gem during the summer, but that caused total uproar that forced the owners into a total U-turn.
They would be foolish to do the same, but instead bring Koopmeiners aboard as a much-needed mentor for him, and even Hayden Hackney.
