Ex-Bayer Leverkusen boss installed as new favourite to be next Crystal Palace manager after Oliver Glasner

Roger Schmidt is now the frontrunner to succeed Oliver Glasner as Crystal Palace manager according to one of the leading UK bookmakers.

Glasner became the most successful manager in Crystal Palace’s history last year, but felt aggrieved at how he was not fully backed in the transfer window following last season’s FA Cup triumph.

Those disagreements have led to uncertainty around his future, and all the signs have pointed to him making an amicable exit at the end of this campaign when his contract comes to an end.

Glasner announced last week that he will leave Palace at the end of the season, with links to the likes of Man United and Tottenham arising following his shock reveal.

Palace have been backed to sack Glasner ahead of his summer departure amid their current poor run of form, and Schmidt is now the leading contender to succeed him at Selhurst Park based on the latest odds.

Roger Schmidt is the 2/1 favourite to be Palace’s next permanent boss

58-year-old Schmidt has held managerial roles with a number of top European clubs, such as RB Salzburg, Leverkusen, PSV and Benfica.

He spent nearly three years at Leverkusen between 2014 and 2017, emerging with a 51.54 win percentage as he led them to Champions League qualification in his first two seasons in charge.

The German boss guided Benfica to a Primeira Liga triumph in 2022-23, as he also won the Manager of the Season award, and they became the first Portuguese team to reach the UCL quarter-finals twice in a row before his August 2024 sacking.

He was appointed as the J.League’s new Global Football Advisor last October, but has now emerged as the 2/1 favourite to be Palace’s next permanent manager after Glasner, according to one of the UK’s top bookmakers.

Who else is in the running to succeed Glasner at Palace?

Schmidt;s odds have been slashed in the last 24 hours to be the next manager in charge of the Eagles, with ex-England chief Gareth Southgate the previous favourite to be the next Palace boss.

He is now the third-favourite at 6/1 odds, behind Getafe’s Jose Bordalas, who is priced at 11/2 by the same top bookmaker.

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is next up at odds of 8/1, while the likes of Frank Lampard, Inigo Perez and Kieran McKenna are all also in the running, priced at 10/1.

It remains to be seen who will be the next man in the Selhurst Park dugout, and whether they could even be in place before the end of the campaign if Glasner makes a premature exit.
