Ex-England keeper: Untouchable Alisson fighting to keep his place from Kelleher after what he’s seen at Liverpool

Paul Robinson has insisted long-time untouchable Alisson is fighting to keep his place “for the first time in his Liverpool career” – due to brilliant deputy Caoimhin Kelleher.

The former England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 23-year-old’s emergence as a genuine option for the starting XI could help the Brazilian shot-stopper up his game.

Alisson put in a man of the match performance in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday (23 January).

The 29-year-old is firmly Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice goalkeeper at Anfield.

However, Robinson suggested Kelleher’s development into an established first-team member is keeping the Brazilian on his toes.

“I think Alisson has had a bit of a stop-start season, in all honesty,” Robinson told Football Insider’s Dylan Childs.

“Kelleher has been fantastic when he has come in. We’re talking about him as a number two and the mentality you have to have as a number two.

“In all honesty, I think Alisson may be under a little bit of pressure. He stood up to that against Crystal Palace. I thought he was outstanding. Probably man of the match.

“But I think probably for the first time in his Liverpool career he is under pressure. There is clearly a pecking order. I am not going to sit here and say Kelleher should be number one.

“Alisson might have a dip in form and have two or three games where he does not play up to standard. Liverpool have a number two goalkeeper who is able to play.

“Some goalkeepers relish a rival and pressure behind them. Knowing there is someone there more than capable of doing your job. Otherwise, they shrink.

“It will be interesting to see what Alisson does. On this weekend’s showing, he was absolutely outstanding.”

Kelleher has played six times for Liverpool this season.

He has a total of 15 first-team appearances under his belt.
