Ex-Everton CEO furious at points deduction twist – ‘it’s a very bad sign for football’

Point deductions and financial concerns are “worrying”, says ex-Everton chief Keith Wyness

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has insisted off-field controversy causing point deductions and restricting the ability to sign players is a “very bad sign for football”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the business and legal side of the game is now starting to “dominate”.

Everton have already been deducted 10 points so far in the 2023-24 campaign for breaching Financial Fair Play restrictions.

The Toffees and Nottingham Forest have been charged with another breach and are expected to learn their fate in April, while Man City were charged with 115 breaches last year (2023).

2024’s January transfer window saw the least spending in 12 years with clubs now fearing they will fall foul of FFP regulations and be subjected to an on-field penalty.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It seems that off-field business and distractions are starting to become bigger than the actual football.

“It’s so wrong.

“It’s worrying that the business side of football and the legal side of football is starting to dominate.

“If it’s starting to affect the transfers and the ability to make changes and increase the size of your squad – then I think it’s a very bad sign for football.”
