Ex-Fifa chief issues emphatic Arsenal claim after analysing controversial Aaron Ramsdale footage

The VAR decision to overturn a Leicester City penalty in their 4-2 loss to Arsenal on Saturday (13 August) was “brilliant”, according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed VAR worked exactly as it was designed after Darren England decided Aaron Ramsdale had fouled Jamie Vardy.

As shown on the BBC’s Match of the Day programme, Vardy was played in behind the Arsenal defence as the ball entered the penalty area.

Ramsdale came to challenge for the ball but pulled out at the last minute and no contact was made but the referee pointed to the spot.

VAR official Robert Jones told England to review the incident on the pitchside monitor and he eventually overturned his decision.

“On the penalty kick, from his [England’s] viewing angle, it may well have been a foul,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I think this was a brilliant piece of officiating from the match officials.

“Again, I think he’s squeezed play and looks to be in a good position. Vardy’s gone down, the goalkeeper’s held his hands up which is almost a signal to say ‘I’ve fouled him but got away with it’.

“VAR gave clarity and I think this is how VAR should operate. The referee has made an error, seen it as an error and it has been rectified quickly by the VAR.

“Overall, I think this was the right call. This is what VAR is for – when the referee makes the wrong call from his viewing angle.

“At the end of the day, I think Darren England is going to make a very good referee, his movement on the pitch is something to be applauded and he’s certainly got the courage to make the big calls.”
