Ex-Fifa official: Fabio Paratici may be slapped with FA charge as controversial Tottenham footage analysed

Fabio Paritici could receive a touchline ban or a fine from the FA for his rant at the fourth official at half-time as Tottenham beat Newcastle United 5-1 yesterday (3 April).

That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Paratici’s furious reaction to a flashpoint between Rodrigo Bentancur and Joelinton at the end of the first half.

The 49-year-old was spotted remonstrating with Graham Scott as both players were yellow carded for the incident.

The Spurs sporting director is unusual in that he watches the games along with the coaching staff and substitutes on the bench.

“It doesn’t matter who is sitting in that technical area, they can be shown a yellow or red card,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“This guy should have been shown a red card because he lost it.

“Will the FA come in? If they decide they are going to charge him they will ask the referee and fourth official for their observations.

“What makes it difficult to bring a charge is the law should have been carried out at that point, a red card should have been issued at the time. The law gives them an opportunity to deal with it, they didn’t and it may close the door on the FA bringing a charge.

“The FA should bring in a charge but it depends on whether the referee reports it. That’s unlikely because he should have been sanctioned at the time.

“If he was sent off the FA would have decided on a touchline ban or a fine.

“The referees have got to wake up and not allow this.”
