Ex-Leeds United star: Kalvin Phillips may stay at Elland Road after source’s update

Kalvin Phillips may end up staying at Leeds United for the 2022-23 season.

That’s according to ex-Whites stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the England international’s future.

As revealed by this site on 21 June, Aston Villa and West Ham have submitted bids for Phillips this summer though the midfielder has his heart set on joining Man City and has made that clear behind the scenes to all parties.

Leeds United

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the 26-year-old is expected to complete what will be a big-money move to the Etihad Stadium in the coming weeks.

However, if Phillips does not end up joining City, Kenny can see him staying at Leeds.

“If the City move falls through, you never know, would he leave for Villa or West Ham?” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Is that an upgrade for him? He is a boyhood Leeds fan. I don’t think that’s a massive step forward.

“City, yeah, I understand it. But for me, Phillips will stay if the man City deal doesn’t get done.

“Maybe West Ham now I think about it, they have Europe which is a step up. But does that trump playing for your boyhood team?

“I just think if he is to leave then it has to be that step right to the very top. I don’t think he goes to Villa or West Ham.”

Leeds

Phillips only played 20 times in the 2021-22 Premier League due to a hamstring injury.

He has made 234 total appearances for the Whites.
