Ex-manager: Roberts ‘fretting’ over Leeds future after snubbing new contract

Tyler Roberts may be “fretting” over his future game time at Leeds United after holding off on signing a new contract, according to Alex McLeish.

The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 22-year-old could “move on” if he does not see himself featuring regularly next season.

As revealed by Football Insider, Roberts has so far snubbed Leeds’ offer of a new contract as he heads into the final year of his current deal.

It is understood Newcastle United are keeping close tabs on the Wales international ahead of a potential summer raid.

Speaking last month, Marcelo Bielsa branded Roberts a “rare talent” and insisted there are “not many players with his creative assets”.

However, McLeish suggested Roberts may be considering his future if he does not see himself as part of the manager’s starting XI

“I do believe that players fret when they don’t get enough game time,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“That is what they have actually strived and trained for throughout their formative years in the academies. They just want to play for that first team. Therefore, if they don’t feel they get enough time, players move on.

“He’s still young, these are his early years where he has to make that massive impression. That Leeds never say die attitude and then, as he gets more experienced, trying to be an integral part of the manager’s thinking.

“What I mean by that is he’s got to be one of the nucleus of the bunch of players that play every week.”

Roberts scored his first Premier League goal in the 2-0 win over Southampton in midweek.

He has made 14 starts in 26 top-flight appearances this term.
