Ex-manager ‘wowed’ as Joelinton and ‘Marmite’ Newcastle teammate transformed by Howe

Alex McLeish has been blown away by the transformation of Joelinton and Jonjo Shelvey under Eddie Howe at Newcastle United.

The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the duo, who have been frequently criticised by fans, have been given a “kick up the bum” since the new manager’s arrival.

Joelinton have been moved from an attacking role into a midfield berth alongside Shelvey in recent weeks.

The Brazilian, 25, was a standout performer in Monday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United, notably in winning possession back for the Magpies.

McLeish raved over the former forward’s transition into a midfield role.

He also heralded Shelvey’s improved work rate in the middle of the pitch.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I was totally impressed with them the other night. Shelvey looked a different class.

“I’ve always liked Shelvey. He’s a bit like marmite but I actually like marmite. I’ve been a Shelvey fan for a lot of years.

“I know people say maybe it doesn’t work as hard, that kind of thing, but he’s a brilliant manipulator of the football.

“Joelinton? Wow, wow, what a game he had. There’s no doubt they’ve had a gee-up, a kick up the bum from the new manager.

“They now know their place is threatened if they don’t up the ante. Eddie Howe has used them in a different way.

“Shelvey has shown a desire to work really hard. If he can combine that with the good talent then there’s a player there. There’s always been a player there.”

Shelvey has been a mainstay under Howe, missing just one game since his arrival.

He scored his first goal of the season in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool.
