Ex-Premier League referee blasts two ‘joke’ decisions as controversial Tottenham footage analysed

Tottenham had two goals wrongly disallowed in their 1-1 draw with Southampton yesterday (28 December), according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee insisted Harry Kane’s was not offside when he put the ball in the Saints net and there was no foul on Fraser Forster when he appeared to drop the ball into his own goal.

Kane had his second goal of the game disallowed when VAR adjudged him to have been offside when Harry Winks played him in behind the Saints defence before he finished calmly past Forster.

As quoted by football.london after the game, Antonio Conte insisted Kane’s second goal should have stood.

Later on in the second half, Tottenham had the ball in the back of the net once again after Matt Doherty challenged Forster as a cross came in.

However, Anthony Taylor blew his whistle for a foul as the goalkeeper lost control of the ball and it ended up in his net and VAR did not think it was a clear and obvious error – a decision Hackett disagreed with.

He said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “We witnessed a Harry Kane goal ruled out for alleged offside.

“I thought under the new arrangement this offside would not be given. A look at the photo and at worse Kane is level.

“The ruling out of a goal when the goalkeeper dropped the ball, this is also a joke.

“This was a clear and obvious error and VAR should have intervened and the goal should have been allowed to stand.

“I wonder what fairy story the PGMOL will produce this time.”
