Ex-Premier League referee issues ‘illegal’ Luke O’Nien claim as Sunderland flashpoint analysed
Hull City should have been awarded a penalty kick in their 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Saturday (17 December) for Luke O’Nien’s challenge on Oscar Estupinan, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee accused O’Nien of using his arms “illegally” and questioned why the officials did not spot his foul.
As shown in footage on Hull City’s YouTube channel, Estpuinan is dragged to the ground as Sunderland defended a cross into the box towards the end of the first half.
Hull were eventually awarded a penalty kick in the second half but Estupinan missed from 12 yards.
“It was nailed on,” Hackett said after analysing footage of the first incident with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“It was like the one on Harry Maguire in England against Iran at the World Cup that wasn’t given.
“He’s got his arms wrapped around him. The defender uses his arms illegally against his opponent.
“The consequences of that has to be a holding offence and a penalty kick should be awarded.
“Where’s the referee? The thing is the referee has become detached from play. Even so, he should have a view.
“For me, that’s a penalty kick.”

Sunderland are now midtable in the Championship in their first season back in the division after four years in League One.
Tony Mowbray’s side are next in action on Boxing Day when they host his former side Blackburn Rovers at the Stadium of Light.
In other news, Sunderland have made a move to sign an Aston Villa star and he may go in January.
