Ex-Premier League referee lambasts Hugo Lloris as controversial Tottenham footage emerges – ‘Get real’
Tottenham can have no complaints with Newcastle United’s opening goal in their 2-1 win in north London on Sunday (23 October), according to Keith Hackett.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee insisted it was poor goalkeeping from Hugo Lloris who has to “get real” if he thinks the goal should have been chalked off.
Lloris came out of his penalty area to clear a ball over the top but after controlling it he collided with Wilson.
The goalkeeper was left on the floor and Wilson picked up the loose ball and finished with a chipped shot from just outside of the penalty area.
The Spurs captain was left incensed and complained to referee Jarred Gillett but, after a VAR review, the goal was allowed to stand.
“Great, a good piece of refereeing,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“I think it was poor goalkeeping and then he is trying to blame the referee. Get real, that’s absolutely the right call.
“Where does he go? He didn’t unfairly impede the goalkeeper neither did he hold the goalkeeper. Therefore, no offence and the goal stands.
“It’s a good piece of refereeing, a good piece of work between the referee and VAR. They reviewed it and said it was OK. I think VAR and the referee were really in sync with one another.”

The win for Newcastle has seen them enter the Premier League top four.
Eddie Howe’s side now sit fourth, seven points behind league leaders Arsenal.
