Ex-Fifa official: Man United to be punished as ‘points deduction’ cited – ‘clearly guilty’

Keith Hackett has insisted both Man United and Crystal Palace will receive a charge and a fine for failing to control their players following a mass confrontation during their meeting on Saturday (4 February).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed Casemiro deserved his red card “every day”.

As seen in footage from the Sky Sports Premier League YouTube channel (4 February), tensions boiled over for a number of Man United and Crystal Palace players after Antony was bundled over on the touchline.

Following a VAR review of the incident by video referee Tony Harrington, Casemiro was shown a red card by referee Andre Mariner.

10-man Man United managed to hold on to secure a 2-1 win over the Eagles and further strengthen their case for a top-four finish this season.

Hackett cited the 1990 match between Arsenal and the Red Devils which saw both sides deducted league points – a game which he refereed.

When asked about potential punishments for the fracas, he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It will be a fine for both clubs.

“It’s interesting because I actually was in charge of the game which had the blow-up which resulted in points deductions. The Man United – Arsenal game in 1990.

“I don’t expect that to happen.

Man United

“It will be a charge of failing to control their players and a fine because they are clearly guilty of losing control. Casemiro can’t do what he did.

“Football is played with feet, not with hands. It’s a red card every day and something you don’t want to see.”
