Ex-Premier League referee: Scott McTominay deserves extended ban as ‘unbelievable’ Man United footage emerges

Scott McTominay should have been sent off as Man United were held to a 1-1 draw by Leicester City on Saturday (2 April), according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed it was “unbelievable” that McTominay was not shown a red card for his challenge on James Maddison.

Just after half-time, the 25-year-old caught Maddison with his studs up and boot off the ground but was only cautioned.

He would have missed United’s next three Premier League games with Everton, Norwich City and Liverpool if he was shown a red card.

“It was unbelievable that Scott McTominay got away with that challenge,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He was off the ground, he endangered the safety of his opponent. For me, that’s a red card.

“I thought Andre Marriner was in a good position to actually see that offence and make a judgement on it. He jumped in with a yellow.

“VAR Michael Oliver just thought ‘Fine, I’ll go along with it’ but that’s a red card, no question.

“If referees haven’t got one eye on him they are not doing their job as he’s a serial offender.

“His manager needs to talk to him and say ‘There’s a line which you don’t cross’. There’s aggression but he’s a bit loose.

“Is he trying to build on the reputation of Roy Keane and mirror the way he operated? He’s not in the same class as Keane but his aggression has to be measured.”

In other news, Man United could sign Romelu Lukaku 2.0 after a £76m report.
