Joelinton causes a mass brawl vs Tottenham

Joelinton should have been sent off for his challenge on Mohammed Kudus, having caught the Ghanaian halfway up the player’s body with a scissor action.

Understandably, the Spurs star reacted in an unprofessional manner, also earning himself a caution, before teammates of both players got involved and were eventually split up by Chris Kavanagh.

Richarlison, Joao Palhinha, Malick Thiaw, and Schar had all gone into the referee’s notebook before the incident, all for isolated incidents, and everything appeared to be under control until this moment.

While Kavanagh managed to stop emotions from bubbling over, this is unlikely to stop the incident from going any further off the pitch, or so Hackett believes.

Keith Hackett expects the FA to intervene after Newcastle vs Spurs scenes

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the potential repercussions of the scenes after Joelinton‘s tackle, the former referee said: “I expect both teams to be sanctioned for failing to control their players.

“We saw in pre-season, the authorities were talking clearly about only the captains speaking to the referee. We are not witnessing much of that.”

Arsenal were recently charged by the FA for failing to control their players during a game against Wolves in January 2025, in which several surrounded Michael Oliver after brandishing a red card.

It could be some time until Newcastle and Spurs hear from the authorities, though.
