Ex-striker shares what he’s ‘heard’ about Bielsa with weeks to run on Leeds contract

Frank McAvennie claims Marcelo Bielsa would have told Leeds United if he wasn’t going to sign a new contract by now.

The former West Ham and Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has no doubts that Bielsa will still be in charge of the club next season.

Bielsa, 65, is out of contract at the end of the season after only signing a one-year extension when his previous deal ran out in the summer.

He made positive noises about staying at Leeds in February with Yorkshire Evening Post quoting Bielsa as saying, “I feel integrated with the city and also this region in England and also what surrounds it, Yorkshire.”

McAvennie also claims he only hears good things about Bielsa and his relationship with his players.

When asked if Leeds fans should be concerned about Bielsa’s future, McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, “I don’t think so.

“He’ll want to stay there because he hasn’t really seen Elland Road full in the Premier League.

“Bielsa would have let the club know if he wasn’t going to sign. We would know. He’s that kind of man.

“His stock is high at the moment and he commands respect. He’s loyal to his players and all I hear is he wants his players to be good in life.

“Good managers look after their players. I don’t think there is any danger of him leaving. He’s in the community there.”

Bielsa has now spent more time at Leeds United than any other club in his managerial career.

The Whites are next in action against Tottenham on Saturday afternoon.

In other news, Leeds sources have shared a big update in the club’s hunt for Rodrigo De Paul.
