Ex-Uefa official: Celtic may get caught out by unusual law as controversial Moritz Jenz footage analysed

Celtic can have no complaints with the retaken penalty in their 4-3 win over Hearts at the weekend (22 October), according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Uefa and Premier League referee insisted coaches need to be better informed on the processes involving retaken penalty kicks.

As shown on the BBC’s Sportscene programme, Hearts were awarded a second penalty for Moritz Jenz’s challenge on Cammy Devlin.

Lawrence Shankland’s initial effort was saved before it was eventually bundled over the line by Josh Ginnelly.

VAR intervened and the penalty had to be retaken as footage showed that Ginnelly and Jenz had both entered the area before the kick was taken.

Shankland converted from the spot at the second time of asking to complete his hat trick.

“The first question is, did the goalkeeper come off his line with both feet? No,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“Was there encroachment? Yes, there was more encroachment by the Celtic players but there was encroachment by the goalscorer.

“It’s one of those things that can catch you out.

“Because there was encroachment from both sets of players, if he had scored, they would have retaken it. If you don’t score, you still retake it.

“It’s the one section where no matter what, the penalty is retaken. It’s the easy bit of the law.

“If it was just an attacking player and it goes in, the penalty is retaken. If he misses, the game is restarted with an indirect free-kick, that’s the one that catches referees out.

“This is one aspect of the law that coaches should be aware of.”

In other news, Celtic have set aside “significant cash” to sign a proven star and a January deal is possible.
