Ex-Uefa official: David Moyes set for official face-to-face talks after ‘massive’ twist in West Ham controversy

The head of the PGMOL Mike Riley should visit David Moyes at West Ham on Monday (5 September) to explain why Maxwel Cornet’s late goal in the 2-1 loss to Chelsea was disallowed.

That is the view of ex-Uefa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider as West Ham demand answers from the PGMOL.

The Hammers thought they had secured a point at Stamford Bridge after Cornet had the ball in the back of the net in the 90th minute.

However, referee Andy Madley reviewed the footage on the pitchside monitor after a VAR intervention and awarded Chelsea a free-kick for a foul on Edouard Mendy by Jarrod Bowen.

The Athletic reported on Sunday (4 September) that the club will seek clarification over the decision.

Moyes called the decision “scandalous” and “absolutely rotten” in his post-match interview.

“The current boss of the PMGOL should be meeting David Moyes on Monday face-to-face to explain how his officials got this so wrong,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Or, if the PGMOL boss believes they’ve got it right, try and sell that to David Moyes but I think David Moyes is spot on.

“I’m talking from experience because I have, on occasion, gone across and had face-to-face meetings with David Moyes.

“So, I think West Ham have a right to be aggrieved, massively, along with their fans who have been let down by VAR intervention.

“It’s also about management by the PGMOL. They are not giving freedom to their referees to say ‘No, I’m sticking with my decision.”
