Exclusive: Bent baffled as West Ham set sights on signing star man from title hopefuls

Darren Bent admits he is baffled as West Ham set their sights on signing West Brom loanee Matheus Pereira this summer.

The former Aston Villa and Tottenham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that the Irons already have enough players in the same mould as the Brazilian forward.

As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, the Hammers are plotting a potential transfer deal for the 23-year-old after his impressive form on loan from Sporting CP.

However, Bent insists that Moyes and his men do not need another attacking midfielder of Pereira’s ilk, despite his displays at the title hopefuls.

“I put him in the same bracket as Felipe Anderson, Lanzini, Yarmolenko – they’ve got a lot of this type of player,” Bent told Football Insider

“Fair play, he’s good on the ball, can makes things happen but I’m not quite sure dropping in another one of that type of player, into that environment, is going to work.

“I’m more inclined to go and get someone of Antonio’s type of make-up, if that makes sense; big, powerful, you know what you’re going to get from him game to game.

“When you bring another Lanzini, Yarmolenko, that type of player, I’m just not quite sure how it’s going to work.”

Pereira has been a star performer for West Brom this season, chipping in with six goals and 16 assists in their push for Championship glory.

Robert Snodgrass has been West Ham’s most impactful attacking player with five goals and five assists under his belt, the likes of Anderson and Lanzini struggling to produce.

In other West Ham news, a former striker believes a player with just two Premier League starts has Moyes drooling.
