Exclusive: Bent shares title verdict amid big update on Liverpool last-gasp signing

Jurgen Klopp needs to add at least one new signing before Monday’s transfer deadline if Liverpool “have any aspiration” of winning the Premier League.

That is the view of former top-flight striker Darren Bent who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes the Reds’ title hopes would have been over had they lost to Tottenham in midweek.

As first revealed by Football Insider on Friday morning (29 January), Liverpool are weighing up a late move for USA international Aaron Long after the 28-year-old was made available for a short-term loan by New York Red Bulls.

As quoted by Goal.com, Jurgen Klopp confirmed the Reds would “try” and sign a new centre-back before Monday’s transfer deadline after Joel Matip joined Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Fabinho in the treatment room.

Bent admitted bringing at least one new face in was imperative for Liverpool if they wanted to have any hope of keeping up their hopes of retaining the league title.

Asked how important he thought a new signing would be for Liverpool, Bent told Football Insider: They’re going to need it. If they have any aspiration to get themselves winning the league, they’re going to need it.

“I think against Spurs was where they showed their credentials, because they were a Liverpool team in no real great form. It was one of those that they had to show they’re ready for this title challenge.

“If they had lost or had drawn, it would have been difficult for them.”

Liverpool kicked off the weekend sitting in fourth, four points behind table-toppers Manchester City.

The Reds face West Ham on Sunday, with the fifth-placed Irons able to leapfrog Klopp and his men with a win.
