Exclusive: Brentford sensation Michel Boni at centre of three-way race

Brentford forward Michel Boni is at the centre of a three-way battle over his international future, sources have told Football Insider.

France, Ivory Coast and Benin are all trying to persuade the 17-year-old to pledge his allegiance to their country ahead of the upcoming international break.

Boni, who holds a French passport despite being born in Milton Keynes to parents from Benin and Ivory Coast, now has a big decision to make over his future.

The striker has impressed for Brentford’s B team so far this season, scoring four goals in seven Premier League Cup appearances, and his reputation is growing.

He went on to explain that his footballing heroes largely hail from Ivory Coast, including the likes of Didier Drogba who he labelled “a massive inspiration”.

That likely gives Les Elephants the edge in persuading him over his international future, but the temptation and ambition to represent a star-studded France team will be strong.

Meanwhile, Benin feel they can offer a clearer pathway into their senior side despite the striker not yet having made his senior debut at club level.

Premier League sides set sights on Matthew Cox

Boni is not the only Brentford youngster attracting high-level attention thanks to his performances this season, with on-loan Matthew Cox shining away from West London.

The 22-year-old has spent the season on loan at Shrewsbury Town, where he has attracted high-profile interest thanks to his displays for the League Two side.

Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Cox is being tracked by Premier League sides as well as those from Europe as a result of his recent form.

A host of scouts from top-level sides have been tracking his performances and were watching him in person during Shrewsbury’s recent win against Salford.

He missed a chunk of last year after getting injured whilst on loan at Crawley Town, but he is now back to full fitness and could be set for a big move in the summer.
