‘Phwoar…’ – Pundit Exclusive: Everton star questioning failed Man United move

Everton defender Leighton Baines will still be thinking about how he had the chance to join Manchester United, according to Michael Brown.

The former Leeds and Manchester City midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes that the failed move to Old Trafford will be the “one question” the defender has about his career.

The BBC report that Everton have offered the 35-year-old a one-year contract extension to remain at Goodison Park, with his current terms set to expire this summer.

The left-back has been with the Toffees since 2007 but held talks over a potential move to United back in the summer of 2013.

Having seen Baines remain loyal to Everton, Brown claims that the defender must still think about what would have happened had he chosen to move to Old Trafford.

Brown told Football Insider: “He could have gone to Manchester United and he didn’t go – that’s one thing you’ve got to look at and go ‘Phwoar, what a decision that was in his career!’

“He’s gone on and had a very good Everton career but I bet it’s one question he’ll have – he showed his loyalty to the football club and this is what we’re talking about, of staying when you could have possibly gone.

“I’m glad to see he’s got that contract offer.”

Baines has a total of 417 appearances under his belt for the Toffees, as well as 30 caps for England.

However, he has been Carlo Ancelotti’s second-choice left-back this season, playing just six times across all competitions.
