Celtic have made an approach to sign Wigan Athletic defender Nathan Byrne, Football Insider sources understands.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has made a new right-back one of his top targets this summer and Byrne is understood to figure high on his wanted list.
The 26-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at Wigan and a well placed source has told Football Insider the club are bracing themselves for an offer from Celtic if they follow up their initial enquiries in the player.
Rodgers considered a move for former Hull defender Moses Oduabajo on a free transfer after inviting him out to the club’s training camp in Austria, but he has ended his interest in Oduabajo leaving him considering other targets to fill the right-back berth.
Byrne has emerged on Celtic’s radar after enjoying a superb season with Wigan last term as he helped them win promotion back to the Championship.
The former Tottenham youngster made 51 appearances in all competitions for Wigan last year and provided eight assists from right-back for Paul Cook’s men.
Byrne, who can play at right-back as well as right wing, also played for Wigan in their memorable FA Cup win over Manchester City helping his side keep a clean sheet against the Premier League champions.
