Exclusive: Mills reacts as Leeds fear revolt & Radrizzani posts Twitter view
Danny Mills has claimed the Premier League and EFL are “jumping the gun” with ‘Project Restart’ as Leeds United eagerly await updates on plans to complete this season.
The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested handing virus testing kits to football clubs would be a “waste” while there are only a limited amount available in the UK.
The plan for the return of domestic action, or ‘Project Restart’ as it is being coined, could see fixtures played as soon as June 6.
Leeds owner, Andrea Radrizzani, showed his support for resuming the season on Twitter and is pushing hard behind the scenes for the Championship season to restart amid growing Leeds fears of a club revolt.
France, Belgium and the Netherlands have all terminated their domestic campaigns with Paris Saint-Germain last night crowned Ligue 1 champions.
Mills insisted there is no reason football should be given preferential treatment over other businesses.
“If football resumes why cannot people in everyday jobs?” He told Football Insider. “Why cannot cricket and rugby resume? And why can the local cafe and restaurant not open?
“Social distancing in football does not work. They are all going to come into close proximity. You have masseurs and physios mixing.
“Even if it is behind closed doors you have to think about the number of people needed to put on a game.
“If there is enough tests then fine. Surely if there are only a limited amount of tests, and they have to test football clubs on a daily basis, that is a lot of tests effectively wasted.
“They are jumping the gun and trying to get ahead of everything and trying to be treated differently to the rest of the country.”
The Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, claimed to have been in touch with the Premier League and wanted football to return “as soon as possible”.
The governing bodies have been given a May 25 deadline by UEFA to present their proposals for the completion of the season.
