Exclusive: Ex-Everton CEO Keith Wyness slaughters Premier League after Man City ‘points deduction’ update

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has insisted Man City’s 115 financial charges should be heard before any new punishment is handed down to the Toffees or Nottingham Forest.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – also ripped into Premier League chief executive Richard Masters and his lack of transparency.

Everton and Nottingham Forest were charged with breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) rules on Monday (15 January).

The Merseysiders have already fallen foul of PSR rules and were deducted 10 points earlier this season for a separate breach.

Top-flight clubs are permitted to lose a maximum of £105million over a three-year period (£35million a season).

Nottingham Forest were only allowed a loss of £61million up to the 2022-23 campaign after spending the previous two seasons in the Championship.

These new charges have surfaced despite Man City’s case, which was announced in February 2023, still being outstanding.

Masters has confirmed that a date has been set for the hearing but refused to make the timeline public.

Wyness told Football Insider: “I think the Man City case should have been resolved first before any other clubs and cases are heard.

“The reason I say that is that we’re now seeing point deductions impact the table and the integrity of the Premier League.

“You can’t have cases like Man City’s still outstanding when other clubs are being punished.

“It should be taken case-by-case, in the order they are charged. Everything should wait until each one is resolved in turn.

“That seems the sensible way to do it.

“If they’ve got a big problem with Man City, and obviously they have, then so what? We’ve got to wait until it’s sorted.

“Richard Masters has said that the Premier League are very transparent, just before he says he can’t reveal the date of Man City’s hearing.

“They’re not transparent, it’s ridiculous.”
