Exclusive: Ex-striker expecting big development after Rangers whistleblower claims

Noel Whelan claims there will be an external investigation over the SPFL’s resolution vote after Rangers made claims of evidence against the governing body.

The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists he is sure the Gers’ stinging accusations will lead to action being taken.

The Light Blues claimed earlier in March that they had received concerning evidence via a whistleblower over the vote among clubs to decide whether the end the Scottish football season or not.

Football Insider has since revealed that the Glasgow giants will only give the evidence to an independent investigation after blasting the SPFL’s suggestion they would hold an internal assessment.

Whelan admits that Rangers might be fighting a losing battle but believes their actions will lead to external bodies delving into the controversial process.

Asked if he thought there should be an external investigation, Whelan told Football Insider: “Yeah, I would think so. When you’ve got a club like Rangers, with the sort of power that they hold, you’ve got to look into it.

“Sometimes, you’ve got a governing body, how can you attack that? They hold all the keys unfortunately and probably stronger as a governing body than Rangers are. They made the decision.

“As much as it might rile you and you know things haven’t been done the proper way, how can you win? At least their voice has opened that box and I’m sure there will be an external investigation into everything and how it’s been handled.”

The SPFL has called the bottom three divisions of Scottish football to an immediate halt after the vote passed, meaning relegation and promotion has been confirmed.

With the Premiership still suspended, Rangers sit 13 points behind table-toppers Celtic in the hunt for the top-flight title.

In other Rangers news, Gerrard has been urged to sign a forward who has bullied Celtic this season.
