Exclusive: Hardly-seen Celtic player to start v Ferencvaros on one condition
Frank McAvennie has tipped Celtic new boy Albian Ajeti to make his full debut tonight if Neil Lennon opts to play two up top against Ferencvaros.
The Hoops legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that the 23-year-old has leapfrogged Patryk Klimala and Leigh Griffiths in the pecking order since his arrival at Parkhead.
Ajeti, who was signed from West Ham two weeks ago, grabbed his first goal for the Bhoys on Saturday in what was only his second appearance for the club.
The Hoops take on Hungarian side Ferencvaros tonight at Celtic Park as they continue their march towards the UEFA Champions League qualification.
The Scottish Premiership champions thrashed KR Reykjavik 6-0 last week to set up tonight’s second round of qualifying tie.
Ajeti has just two substitute appearances to his name to date and when asked by Football Insider if he expected the striker to be handed his first start tonight, McAvennie said:
“Lenny might start Ajeti if he decides to play two up front.
“We are overloaded in the midfield at the moment. Sometimes Christie and McGregor are too similar.
“I do not know if he will play two but if he does, one of the midfield players will drop out. It is a great headache for a manager to have.
“Eddy is clearly the number one but I think if Lenny ever opts to play two up top, Ajeti will be the other.”
When speaking on Ajeti’s performance against Dundee United, Lennon said: “We got Albi on, he’s not fully fit as you can see but he gives us another attacking option and he comes up with a great winner.
“That will do him the world of good. So it’s been a good day’s work.”
