Exclusive: Hull City interview Michael Beale to replace Ruben Selles
Hull City have interviewed Michael Beale as a potential replacement for Ruben Selles, sources have told Football Insider.
The club parted ways with the 41-year-old Portuguese at the end of the season after just six months in charge, having narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship on goal difference on the final day of the campaign.
Selles succeeded Tim Walter in November 2024, taking charge for just 28 matches and winning just nine of them, before departing the MKM Stadium as the risk of relegation threatened.
Now, it is understood that Beale is on the list of potential appointments ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, with steps being taken to discuss appointing the 44-year-old following his exit from Sunderland in 2024, and a short spell as Steven Gerrard’s assistant in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq this term.

Michael Beale interviewed for Championship job after Sunderland exit
Beale’s stint at the Stadium of Light lasted just two months before being sacked by the Mackems during the 2023/24 campaign, seeing him without a managerial role since February of last year.
There have been rumours about the manager potentially returning to Ibrox if Steven Gerrard is to be appointed this summer, though Rangers fans are unlikely to welcome Beale back with open arms, given his stint in the top job there.
His time in management has been a rollercoaster of emotions, certainly from his time in Scotland, after winning over 70 per cent of his games but still facing pressure for falling well behind Old Firm rivals, Celtic.
He also burned bridges at his first stop as a manager, leaving QPR under a cloud to take the Rangers job despite expressing his loyalty to the London side only weeks earlier when Wolves came calling. He had previously been number two to Gerrard in Glasgow during their title-winning campaign.
Michael Beale | Games | Won | Drawn | Lost | Win % |
QPR | 22 | 9 | 5 | 8 | 40.9 |
Rangers | 43 | 31 | 4 | 8 | 72.1 |
Sunderland | 12 | 4 | 2 | 6 | 33.3 |
Hull City facing difficult decisions ahead of the 2025/26 campaign
Football Insider understands that Hull City have rejected Derby County’s offer for Cody Drameh, and that is unlikely to be the last approach after the Tigers narrowly avoided relegation.
Selles managed to keep the club from dropping down to League One with a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth on the last day of the Championship season, only for that to be his final actions in charge.
Football Insider also understands that Hull City have taken the “next Michail Antonio” on trial, and that could be important after the Tigers scored the fewest goals in the Championship this season.
