Exclusive: Man City 115 charges could scupper Florian Wirtz deal

Man City are concerned that the outcome of their hearing over 115 charges of breaching financial rules could scupper their efforts to sign Florian Wirtz.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about the charges.

The hearings began in September 2024 and ended in December, with the final verdict now not expected to arrive until once the current season has been concluded.

As a result, their ambitious transfer plans could face a stumbling block if they are hit by any direct punishment which could include a transfer ban.

Football Insider revealed on 19 April that Wirtz, 22, is Man City’s number-one target to replace Kevin de Bruyne ahead of his impending departure.

Meanwhile, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that City are hell-bent on signing Wirtz and will do all they can to secure his signature.

Man City dealt potential new blow in Florian Wirtz chase

Former City financial adviser Stefan Borson told Football Insider Man City have shown confidence about the charges as they continue to leak transfer speculation to the media.

However, O’Rouke has insisted the outcome of the hearing could have an immediate influence on City’s business this summer, particularly involving Wirtz.

Those 115 charges, if we every find a verdict on them, might have some influence,” he told Football Insider.

This came after former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider that City are in pole position to sign Wirtz after a meeting in Manchester.

With Bayern Munich and Liverpool also keeping a close eye on his situation, City could miss out if they are eventually punished for their alleged rule breaches.

Despite the looming verdict of their financial charge hearing, City have already begun putting plans in place to back Pep Guardiola in the transfer window.

Football Insider revealed on 18 May that Man City are prepared to spend £200million on new players when the window opens next month.

After spending £180million on incoming deals in January, City’s financial situation remains positive, while they are prepared to sell players to bolster their kitty.

This comes after former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider McAtee will not be a Man City player at the start of next season.
