Exclusive: Mansfield Town agree deal to sign Brighton star Caylan Vickers

Brighton forward Caylan Vickers has agreed a deal to join Mansfield Town on loan, sources have told Football Insider.

The 20-year-old will now undergo medical tests at the training ground before putting the finishing touches on his short-term move to Field Mill.

Vickers joined Brighton from Reading this time last year after having made 14 senior appearances in League One, and is now considered ready for a return to the third tier.

Since the move to the south coast, he has been a prominent part of the Segulls’ under-21s squad, and has scored five goals in 12 Premier League 2 appearances this term.

Mansfield have been planning to recruit a new striker before the window closes, and Vickers’ availability put him high on their list of targets.

His versatility and ability to play wide on the left or as an attacking midfielder is also seen as a valuable asset to bolster Nigel Clough’s squad.

Mansfield Town agree to sign Brighton star on loan

Mansfield are currently 14th in League One, but sit just seven points away from the playoff places and are harbouring outside hopes of a late push up the table.

However, just one of the 13 clubs above them have scored fewer than their 35 goals in 27 games so far this season, and they are keen to add firepower to their squad.

Vickers was made available by Brighton in the closing stages of the window as they plan for him to continue his development in senior football in the third tier.

His prior experience of the division, albeit a brief introduction before his departure from Reading, made a return to League One the perfect opportunity for all parties.

Vickers will now join Tottenham loanee Matthew Craig as the Stags’ second signing in an attempt to bolster their squad in the mid-season window.
