Exclusive: McNamara rips into senior Rangers player who cracked under pressure v Celtic
Jackie McNamara ripped into Rangers attacker Alfredo Morelos as he suggested the forward cracked under pressure against Celtic.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Parkhead hero claimed Morelos failing to score against the Hoops saw him revert to his old ways.
Morelos missed from a spot-kick in the 1-0 loss to Celtic on Sunday and McNamara believes that missing a penalty saw the Colombian lose his confidence.
McNamara explained that Morelos would have normally scored the chances he missed against Celtic and stated that Steven Gerrard should worry about how the forward lost his rag.
When asked if Gerrard should be worried that Morelos reverted to the old Morelos by lashing out, McNamara told Football Insider: “Yeah, exactly and it’s not good for him.
“He’s been in Old Firm games before and been sent off, they could be three or four goals up and he would have just lashed out, but I think he lost his composure and confidence with the penalty miss.
“He had a few chances and you don’t get many better chances than a penalty, he seems to be lacking a bit of confidence and belief when it comes to scoring against Celtic.
“Scoring against Celtic would have been in his mind, and if he had scored it would have taken the pressure away, he had a great chance after the penalty which he put wide, and normally he would have scored that.
“The pressure of not scoring definitely got to him as he seemed to lose his rag and his composure.”
Morelos has now failed to score in 10 Old Firm matches despite being a consistent goalscorer for the Gers in other games.
The 23-year-old is the Gers’ top goalscorer this season with 15 goals and he has averaged a goal every 84 minutes.
