Exclusive: MTK Budapest make move to sign Exeter City’s Demetri Mitchell

MTK Budapest have registered their interest in signing Exeter City winger Demetri Mitchell, sources have told Football Insider.

The Hungarian outfit are considering offering the former Man United youngster a deal when his Exeter contract expires later this month.

The 28-year-old has been in Devon since January 2023 following a switch from Scottish Premiership outfit Hibernian on undisclosed terms, signing an 18-month contract.

Since then, the former England youth international has made 61 appearances for The Grecians, scoring 12 goals in the process.

Demetri Mitchell injury soured South-West spell with Exeter

Demetri, who can play at left-back, began his career at Old Trafford and made his senior debut in the Premier League against Crystal Palace in 2017.

Two beneficial loan spells at Hearts north of the border earned the Manchester-born wide-man a permanent move to Blackpool, where he helped the club win promotion to the Championship before moving back to Edinburgh with Hibs.

Some notable goals at St James Park included Exeter‘s winner that sent City into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup against then Premier League side Luton in September 2023.

A season-ending ACL injury a month later in the same competition against Middlesbrough saw Demetri suffer a year-long lay-off, and reports suggest his days as a City player are numbered.

Caleb Watts rejects new Exeter deal

Meanwhile, Exeter have criticised midfielder Caleb Watts’ decision to reject a new contract with the club.

The 23-year-old midfielder has reportedly agreed terms with a rival club (BBC Sport) as a free agent this summer.

Having suffered a number of injuries during his two-season spell with City, a club official said: “While we understand this is an offer Caleb could not refuse, we are disappointed he has decided not to repay the commitment and faith shown to him during his time at the club.”
