Exclusive: Newcastle make striker transfer decision after ‘approach’

Newcastle are not planning a move for St Mirren hot-shot Evan Mooney, sources have told Football Insider.

Reports have suggested Newcastle have made an approach for Mooney, but sources have told Football Insider the rumours are wide of the mark.

Newcastle feel they are well equipped in their forward department and have no plans to sign Mooney for their academy.

The strategy in the Magpies’ youth setup is to offer a pathway to the first-team to those currently on the books – and they have high hopes for those youngsters already at the club.

Mooney, who turned 17 in December, is already contributing goals and assists at the senior level after making his St Mirren bow earlier this season.

He has made five total first-team appearances in the 2024-25 campaign, notching two goals and one assist.

The right-winger, who can also play as a centre-forward, is under contract until June 2028.

Arsenal have also been linked with the Scottish youngster, who first appeared on the St Mirren bench as a 16-year-old in the 2023-24 campaign.

Newcastle have recently brought the likes of Lewis Miley, Elliot Anderson, Sean Longstaff and Alex Murphy through their academy.

St Mirren sit fifth in the Scottish Premiership and will hope to increase Mooney’s involvement if his promising development continues.

In other news, Newcastle plan to sell first-team star and sign new winger soon.
