Exclusive: Newcastle new deal on table for £20K-a-wk player, Robinson reacts
Paul Robinson suggested Andy Carroll is deserving of another contract an Newcastle United despite the striker having struggled with injury for much of the campaign.
The former Spurs and Leeds United shot-stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 31-year-old is still be a handful for defences when he is available for selection.
Carroll current contract, in which he earns a basic salary of £20,000 with performance-based bonuses, expires at the end of the month.
Football Insider revealed last weekend that the striker has reached a verbal agreement with the club on a short term extension to his deal and now he is also in line for a new 12-month contract offer.
Robinson admitted the former West Ham and Liverpool forward has not played enough this season but tipped him to feature more prominently over the next six weeks.
“There is a reason they signed him,” he told Football Insider.

“He causes defences problems but nobody has found the formula to get him fit and keep him fit.
“He is still good enough, certainly. You can see the logic in it.
“He hasn’t played anywhere near as much as they wanted to but another year, same again, it kind of makes sense.
“I am sure he will be given game time over the next month as well.”
The English striker is yet to score since returning to St. James’ Park last summer but does have four assists in his 14 appearances across all competitions .
Newcastle return to Premier League action this weekend against this season’s surprise package – Sheffield United.
