Exclusive: Nottingham Forest & Wolves race to sign Ben Godfrey in January deal

Nottingham Forest and Wolves are among four Premier League clubs trying to sign former Everton defender Ben Godfrey from Atalanta in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Godfrey has been unable to break into the Atalanta side riding high at the top of the Serie A table as he has been unable to get consistent minutes with the team on a great run of just one defeat in 15 league games.

Football Insider understands that, rather than sit on the bench and potentially win a Serie A winners medal, Godfrey is keen on a move away in January as he wants to be playing regular games.

Wolves and Forest are among four Premier League clubs plotting loan moves for the versatile performer when the transfer window re-opens next month.

Godfrey joined Europa League champions Atalanta in the summer for a fee in the region of £10million after four successful seasons at Everton.

The twice capped England defender has seen his playing time at Atalanta limited so far this season, making just four appearances in all competitions.

He initially began his career with York City, before sealing a move to Norwich City in the 2016 January transfer window.

After spending the next four-and-a-half year with Carrow Road, he would move to Everton in the summer of 2020.

Godfrey went on to make 93 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees before securing his move to Italy in the summer.

The defender signed a five-year contract that secures his future with Atalanta until the end of the 2028/29 season.

Wolves and Nottingham Forest are eyeing ex-Everton defender Ben Godfrey ahead of January.

In the Premier League, it has been an excellent start to the campaign for Forest, who sit fifth and have already secured wins over the likes of Man United and Liverpool.

They may though need to be smart in the January transfer window as they attempt to manage Profit and Sustainability Regulations.

By contrast, Wolves have struggled this season finding themselves in a relegation battle that has piled the pressure on to manager Gary O’Neil.

In other news, Nelson Semedo has sent a message to Mario Lemina after a big change at Wolves.
